Strong Case

Harden Pours In a Season High 57 Points Against the Grizzlies

The 2018-19 NBA season has started off with a bang, but no louder sound can be heard than that of starting shooting guard for the Houston Rockets, James Harden. Yes, I know that there has been plenty of stories and news articles about the phenomenal season he is having, yet it is nothing like witnessing it firsthand. As I sat on press row at the Toyota Center on Monday night when the Rockets defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 112-94, I was in amazement of what I was seeing.

So Close, Yet So Far Away: The Rockets come up short in their bid for the NBA Finals

In high school, I had the opportunity to play against Mike Miller from Willowridge High School that went on to play college football at Notre Dame and professionally for the Cleveland Browns. Here I was a pretty decent player matched up against an All American. Once the ball was snapped he came towards me with that blazing 4.1 speed and I immediately turned to try and run with him. The ball was thrown high and short.

Rockets Look To Extend Winning Streak Against The Hornets

As one of the hottest teams in the NBA prepares to play on Wednesday. Ok. Wait. I know you are saying to yourself, “Slow down sir. It was just one game.” Semantically speaking you are right. It was just one game to us, but to the Houston Rockets, that game meant everything.

Optimistically Upset

Texans lose season opener to the Saints on a last-second field goal

“Barefield. You almost got it,” said one of my teammates on the basketball team in high school. What he was referring to was my attempt to try and dunk a basketball. I was very close. So close that after a few tries I just hung on the rim. It gave me a sense that one day soon I would complete the task of dunking like my favorite NBA player at the time, Dominique Wilkins.

Great Run Comes to an End

Prairie View A&M loses to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first game of the 2019 NCAA tournament

As I stepped on the illustrious campus of Prairie View A&M University in the fall of 1997, I will never forget that sense of pride and family atmosphere I felt run through my body. It was like the spirits of the “Unknown 8” (The first known class of the Alta Vista Agriculture & Mechanical College for Colored Youth who enrolled and began their studies March 11, 1878) was walking with me. Until you have been on the first state supported college in Texas for African Americans and the second oldest public institution of higher education in the state, you won’t know the jubilation of screaming out, “Who Ya Rooting For” at all sporting events.

Houston (0-3) dropped their third game of the season to the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-0) losing in Heinz Field by a score of 28-21.

Second Wind: Houston Rockets Prepare for the 2018 NBA Playoffs

Ask any distance runner what sets them apart from any other athlete and they will give you the same answer over and over. “I knew I could complete the race when my second wind kicked in,” most would reiterate.
